Gainesville - Robert F. Head, Jr. died on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Haven Hospice. He was 97. Mr. Head was born in Atlanta, Georgia, where he lived until 1952 when he and his wife moved to Gainesville. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech, where he was a member of Chi Phi.
A decorated veteran, Mr. Head was Major and combat commander in artillery, serving in World War II
in Africa and in Europe in seven theaters of operation and in three D-Day invasions. He belonged to the Greater Gainesville Rotary Club
, of which he was an ex-president and charter member.
A long time member of First Presbyterian Church, he was an elder and trustee. Mr. Head served for five years on the city's Pension Fund Review Committee, of which he was chairman for two years. A founding member of Oak Hall School, he served on its first board of directors.
A manufacturer's representative in farm equipment and light industrial equipment, he also had real estate interests in the area and was a ranch owner and cattleman. He belonged to the Gainesville Golf and Country Club for 44 years. Mr. Head and his wife have lived at North Florida Retirement Village since 1999.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Frances B. Head; a daughter, France Addington Lee (Marc) of Denver, CO; a son, Robert F. Head, III (Connie) of Commerce, GA and a sister, Kathleen Head Johnson of Gainesville, GA.
A funeral service will be held Saturday June 7, 2014 at 2:30PM at First Presbyterian Church, 300 SW 3rd St, Gainesville with Scott Stuart officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 PM at the church. A reception will follow at 4:00 PM at The Village Tower Club Ballroom. Entombment will follow in Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, GA with Military Honors on Monday.
