COBURN, TYLER LEE

Gainesville - Tyler Lee Coburn, 81, was victorious over pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at his home in Gainesville, Florida. Tyler was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was surrounded and comforted by family and friends who have shared their lives with him and in passing illustrated both unconditional love and a selfless gift of release for him to go be with the Lord his Savior.

Tyler was born in Cedar Key, FL on October 10, 1931 to Douglas "Dud" Thomas and Myra Wadley Coburn. He was one of five children. He enjoyed life growing up in Cedar Key, graduating from Cedar Key High School as valedictorian, participating in Boy Scouts attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, and was an active member of the Christ Episcopal Church. He was granted an academic scholarship to attend the University of Florida, but after attending one day decided to enroll in the US Navy as had so many from Cedar Key and his family. Tyler served in the US Navy during the time of the Korean War having served on the USS Renshaw and USS McDermit. He returned to Cedar Key where he met a young teacher at Cedar Key HS from Mississippi, (a lady in nice fitting red pants, Linnie Ruth Holifield). They married on Dec 26, 1953. Tyler and Ruth spent most of their married life in Gainesville, where they raised their two daughters. Tyler, aka "Tex" worked for BellSouth/AT&T for 40 years retiring in 1993.

Tyler was an active member of Westside Baptist Church where he served as an usher, and Sunday School teacher. He was a beloved member of the Jabez Sunday School class. He was a dedicated husband, a "superman" as a Dad, and a loving "Pappy" to his granddaughters who he affectionately called Huckleberry (Jordann), Ranger (Hailey), and Cowboy (Blair). He enjoyed landscape gardening, watching birds, fishing, wood working, traveling, spoiling the family's pet dogs, and loving on his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Coburn; daughter and son-in-law Pam and Mike Weldon and daughter and son-in-law Terri and Rory Causseaux, all of Gainesville; sister, Wilma Holman of Bronson and three granddaughters: Jordann Causseaux, Hailey Weldon, and Blair Causseaux. He was preceded in death by sisters, Susie Day and Myra Castell and brother, Henry Coburn.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11:00 am in Westside Baptist Church, 10000 Newberry Road, with Dr. Gary Crawford and Rev. Calvin Carr officiating. Entombment will follow in Memorial Park Central. The family will receive friends Friday, January 18, 2013, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA, 823 NW 143rd Avenue.
