VIRGINIA KING, 89
Alachua - Virginia King Goddard, age 89, died at her daughter's home in Alachua on March 6, 2013. Born in Bartow, Florida in 1923, she was reared in Lakeland, Florida, by her grandparents, Russell and Virginia Owenby.
After graduation from Lakeland High School, she attended Florida College for Women (now Florida State University). In 1943, she wed Ray E. Goddard, who died in 2010. They were married for 67 years. An accomplished seamstress, she took particular pride in sewing wedding and bridesmaid dresses for family members. She also found great pleasure in gardening, both outdoors and in her greenhouse. Another source of satisfaction was the companionship of her small and protective parrot, Peter. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she worked for many years as a bookkeeper in the office of Willard Williams, CPA.
She is survived by four daughters, Lane Goddard (David Hatcher); Lucy Goddard-Teel (George Teel); Betsy Jones (Larry Jones); Carolyn Goddard (Steve Stringer); ten grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m., March 16, 2013, at Milam Funeral Home, 311 South Main Street, Gainesville, with burial on Sunday, March 17 at 11 a.m., Mt. Enon Cemetery, Plant City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a cause Mrs. Goddard supported in her last years: Friends of Children of North Central Florida, Inc., PO Box 358502, Gainesville, FL 32635-8502.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Betsy Jones, at Lacrosse, on Friday evening, March 15th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Call 386-462-9689 for directions).
