Mayo - William "W.G." Croft Jr., 88, of Mayo, FL, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Lafayette Health Care following an extended illness. W.G. was born May 23, 1925 in Mayo, FL, to the late William G. Croft Sr. and the late Eula Dekle Croft. He was preceded in death by a son Gordon Herbert in 2010.

Mr. Croft was of the Baptist Faith and was a member of the Mayo Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for more than 25 years and served as a deacon. He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served aboard the Navy Destroyer USS Solar. He was the founder, and owner and operator of Croft Thriftway in Mayo for 58 years. He served as a board member for Lafayette State Bank for many years and also helped establish the Rural Health and Dental Clinic, an affiliate of the University of Florida. He was also a member of the Mayo Masonic Lodge, the Mayo Rotary Club, and the American Legion. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, traveling, and reading.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judy Ricks Croft, of Mayo; 1 son, Thomas Croft, and wife Carlene, of Mayo; 2 daughters, Barbara Croft Hewett, and husband Dan, of Mayo, and Kathryn Herbert Sticksel, and husband Peter, of Mevane, N.C.; 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Mayo Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Law officiating and Rev. Rick James assisting. Interment will follow in New Hope Baptist Cemetery in Mayo. The family will receive friends from 5-7PM on Friday, November 8, also at Mayo Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mayo Baptist Church, 9160N. Fletcher Ave., Mayo, FL 32066. All arrangements are under the care of Joe P. Burns Funeral Home of Mayo.
