GOERING, HARVEY L.,

PhD, 90

ATHLETE - CHEMIST -

BOOKSELLER

Harvey L. Goering passed peacefully from this life Saturday, December 29 in Gainesville, Florida. He and his wife were the founders and original owners of Goering's Book Center located across from the University of Florida campus. For decades it was the center for UF textbook purchases and had the unique tradition of bringing in musical groups to play for the holidays.

Born in 1922 in a Mennonite wheat-farming community, Moundridge, Kansas to Jonas and Katie Goering, Harvey was the fifth of 12 children. He loved the farm and was particularly interested in the life cycles of the animals. He played both football and basketball in High School and college. He graduated from Bethel College in 1946 interrupted by three years in the Civilian Public Service, an alternative to military service. That service first included surveying activities in a Land Reclamation Project in Terry, Montana after which he was assigned work in the State Mental Hospital, in Provo, Utah, serving as its director, and a final assignment to the Belton Montana Glacier National Park Unit.

After completing his work at Bethel College, Harvey received his PhD in physical-organic chemistry from Ohio State University in 1950 after which he joined the staff of Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio. During that time, he authored and co-authored ten publications, developed several patents, and chaired both the Chemistry and Physics Departments. In 1971, he and his wife chose Gainesville to open a book store which became a hub of activity for casual readers and academics alike. In 1982 they sold the book store to their employees and retired to Sarasota where they opened the Gulf Gate Bookshop. Harvey was an avid golfer and played bridge and tournament chess, to which many students can attest.

Harvey is predeceased by his partner and wife of 61 years, Viola Goering; his grandson, Scott Robert Goering; several brothers and sisters; and is survived by three children, Kathryn Louise Peoples (Bobby), Donald Lloyd Goering (Suzanne), Harvey Charles Goering (Betsy); and grandchildren Kristi Kanode, David Kanode (Cathy), Theresa Gentry (Warren), Colby Goering, Whitney Goering; great-grandchildren, Tiffany McGuire and Kloey Kanode; three brothers and a sister; and former daughter-in-law, Merrily Goering. He is also survived by his loving companion and caretaker, Elizabeth Sugalski.

A service of joy to remember Harvey will be held at 4 P.M. on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the United Church of Gainesville, 1624 N.W. 5th Avenue, Gainesville, Florida where he was a member. In lieu of flowers, please donate in his memory to children's reading programs at the Friends of the Library (430-B North Main Street, Gainesville, FL 32601) or the "Mommy Reads" program at the United Church of Gainesville (1624 N.W. 5th Ave. Gainesville, FL 32603.)
