God graciously took John R. O'Malley into his arms as he passed peacefully on December 2nd, 2012. A loving husband, gentle father and wonderful man, John was a strong and devote Catholic and admired by every member of his family. He was truly devoted to his family and enjoyed every moment with them. John will always be remembered as a supportive, generous and exceedingly thoughtful and spiritual father and man.

John was born May 17, 1928 in Huntington, Indiana to Martin and Cecile Phipps O'Malley.

He earned a Bachelor's degree in Physics, a Master's degree in Engineering from Purdue University and a Law degree from Georgetown University. He was a patent lawyer for General Electric in Syracuse, NY for three years. In 1959 he gave up a promising law practice and became a student once again. In 1964, after completing his PhD at the University of Florida, Dr. O'Malley decided to stay on as a faculty member, thus beginning a successful career in the College of Electrical Engineering that spanned 38 years. After retiring from the University of Florida, he enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending time with his family and volunteering at Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

He leaves behind, his wife of 59 years, Lois Anne O'Malley, and seven children: a son Martin and wife Karen, a daughter Elaine Cowan and husband, Davis, a son John and wife Chris, a son Timothy and wife Siobhan, a daughter Margaret Lanier and husband Sidney, a daughter Cecilia Carey and husband John, a son, Mathew and wife, Leota; He will be missed by his eighteen grandchildren: Jenni and husband Matthew, Alicia and husband Jesse, Stephanie, Ashley, Sarah, Davie, Jack, Patrick, Caitlin, Sean, Bridget, Trey, Ryan, Dillon, Garrett, Kathryn, Connor, and Aedan.

A rosary service will be held at Queen of Peace Chapel, 10900 SW 24th Ave., on Thursday, December 6, at 7:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 7 at 10:30 AM with Father Jeff McGowan as Celebrant.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to A Woman's Answer Medical Center, 3601 SW 2nd Ave., Suite K, Gainesville, FL 32607.
