Alachua - Eugene "Gene" Thomas Chapman, Jr., 53, of Alachua, Florida passed away in his home surrounded by family, on January 28, 2013 from complications of ALS.

The memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, Alachua, Florida. Rev. Tom Fentress will be officiating. Interment is planned for Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.

Gene was born in Alexandria, VA on July 29, 1959. He graduated from Oak Ridge High School, Orlando, FL and continued coursework at Trinity Bible College and Seminary. Gene was married to Sharon Chapman on July 14, 1981; they were married 31 years. Gene worked as a storage facility manager for 6 years before he was diagnosed with ALS. He enjoyed scuba diving, clowning, puppeteering, and loved his family and his wife. He was also actively involved in fund raising and seeking a cure for ALS.

Gene is survived by his wife, Sharon Chapman; his three children, Rebekah Wolfe (Jeffery), Stephen Chapman (Chasity) and Michael Chapman (Madeline); thirteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; two beloved pets, Buttercup and Yoshi and other family and friends. Gene was preceded in death by Eugene Chapman Sr., and Marie Louis (Kalbfleisch) Chapman.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the ALS Association through Funeral arrangements are being handled by Giddens-Reed Funeral Home, Baldwin, Florida, 904-266-2337.
