LANG, JAMES FREDERICK

James Frederick Lang, age 73, passed away Tuesday, September 25,2012 at Harbor House Memory Care at Harbor Chase Assisted Living. He was born on February 14, 1939 to Esther Jordan Lang and Joseph McCarty Lang. He was a fourth-generation Gainesville native.

Mr. Lang attended J.J. Finley School and Gainesville High School. He graduated from the University of Florida, Phi Beta Kappa, and the University of Florida College of Law. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. During his college career he had the honor of representing the University of Florida in the College Bowl against Johns Hopkins University.

Upon graduation from law school, he joined the law firm of Gray, Chandler, O'Neal, Carlisle, Avera, and Gray. He remained with the firm through its many changes and retired from Chandler, Lang, Haswell, and Cole as its senior partner in 2008. He was a member of the Florida Bar Association.

Mr. Lang had a long and distinguished career. In addition to his many private clients, he was counsel to the Alachua County School Board for 39 years. He was a member of the Florida School Board Attorneys Association and served in several. capacities on its Executive Committee. Mr. Lang also represented the Alachua County Health Facilities Authority, the Gainesville Housing Authority, and, in the early years, Florida Camp for Children and Youth With Diabetes, The Boggy Creek Camp for sick children, Campus Credit Union, and Sonny's Real Pit Barbeque.

Mr. Lang served on the board of directors of several local organizations, including St. Francis House, The Volunteer Center, Evergreen Cemetery Association, and Historic Haile Homestead.

Mr. Lang was a life-long member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where he was an usher for many years. He also served many terms as an elected member of the church vestry.

Mr. Lang is survived by his brother, Joseph McCarty Lang, Jr., his wife of 47 years, Judith (Judy) Brill Lang, his daughters, Margaret Schrader and Sarah (Sally) Naporano, his son-in-law, Robert (Bobby) Schrader, III, and his five grandchildren - Jordan Schrader, Robert (Bo) Schrader, IV, Filomena (Mena) Naporano, Thomas (Tommy) Naporano, and Rex Naporano. He is also survived by his parents-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Brill (Gretchen), his brothers-in law and their spouses, Roger Brill (Claudia), Eric Brill (Gail), and Robert Brill (Nancy), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Mr. Lang will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 1st at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 100 N.E. 1st Street, Gainesville, Florida.
