JENSEN, JAMES R.
James (Jim) Jensen, 70, of Gainesville, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Jim is a firm believer in salvation provided through faith in Jesus Christ, and so is now fully restored in the presence of the Lord.
Jim was born in Miami, Fl, on November 17, 1947, and attended Miami Edison High School. He attended Florida State University where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Immediately upon graduation, he left Tallahassee to be reunited with his high school sweetheart and future wife Peggy Jo Griffin at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fl, where he graduated with a Master of Science in Microbiology. Jim briefly served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He then pursued further training as a Medical Lab specialist at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fl, which began his 40 year career as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in several hospitals throughout Florida. He moved his family to Gainesville in 1979 and worked at Shands Hospital in the Radio-immunoassay (RIA) Laboratory until 1993, then worked in Blood Banking until he retired in 2012.
Jim was an avid reader of American war history and thoroughly enjoyed visiting war museums, historical battle sites, and war memorials here in the United States and abroad. He and his wife also enjoyed the outdoors; often visiting Florida and Georgia State Parks to camp and hike. After retirement, they purchased a cabin close to Unicoi State Park in Helen, Georgia, where they frequently vaca-tioned.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Jensen (Griffin). He is also survived by his son Kevin, daughter-in-law Kerri (Canavan) of Charlotte, NC; son Bobby of Gainesville; and daughter Debra Swanzy, son-in-law Forson "Swanzy" of Wellington, Fl. He has seven beautiful grandchildren Noah, Joshua, Victoria, Esther, Kassie, Kailynn, and Karoline.
