CASAGRANDE, JEAN 'J.C.'
Prof. Jean 'J.C.' Casagrande passed away on June 10th after a long illness. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a friend to many. Jean was born in the then French Département of Oran, Algeria in 1938. Following the lead of his older brother, he came to the United States at the age of 19. He served in the US Army from 1958 to 1961, most of that service as an X-ray technician stationed in Germany. While serving in the army, he began college classes with the University of Maryland Overseas Division. Upon discharge from the service, he returned to Tampa, Florida and continued his education at the University of South Florida. While at USF he met a student, Juanita Waters, who would later become his wife. After graduation with a BA degree in 1963, Jean and Juanita married and started graduate work at Indiana University. Upon receiving his PhD, he joined the faculty at Indiana University and worked there until accepting a faculty position at the University of Florida in 1968. During his thirty-five year career at UF, he served in various positions. He was the Director of the Program in Linguistics and the English Language Institute. He founded, along with the late Bohdan Saciuk, the Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages, now in its forty eighth year. He authored several publications, most in the area of French phonetics. He always enjoyed his teaching and served as mentor to many students, younger faculty, and staff members with whom he worked. Off campus, he was active in the Downtown Rotary Club and served as its president in 1998-99. He was an active member of Holy Faith Catholic Church for many years and later a parishioner and choir member at St. Augustine Catholic Student Center.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Michel and Adrienne Casagrande and two brothers, Pierre and Paul Casagrande. He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Juanita; son Paul Casagrande, of Gainesville; daughter Marie (James) Harper, of Decatur, GA; grandchildren Charles, Adrienne, and Margaret Harper; niece Anne (Jose) de la Fuente; nephew Mark (Melanie) Casagrande both of Tampa, FL, and several cousins in France.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Faith Catholic Church, 747 NW 43rd Street, on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 11:30 AM, with Fr. John Gillespie as celebrant.
