Hawthorne - John Caslow Yocum, 80, of Hawthorne, Florida passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2012. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 26th at 2 pm at the First Baptist Church of Hawthorne. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 1 pm at the church.
John Caslow Yocum, born in Hawthorne, Florida, November 3, 1932. Parents, Father, the late Ezra Phelps Yocum and Mother, the late May Matthews Yocum. Married Janet Jackson Yocum, September 10, 1955. They have 3 children, Dr. John C. Yocum, Jr., (Jaynee), Judith Tarr Tartaglia, (Paul) and Cathleen Yocum Chambers (Curt).
John graduated from Landon High School in Jacksonville, Florida in 1951 and received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of Florida in 1956. John was a lifelong member of the Gator Nation and supporter of all the Florida Gator Sports teams. John received an advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy and his lifelong career was as a civilian engineer and administrator with the Department of Defense. John was selected to study Nuclear Engineering by Admiral Hyman Rickover in Pittsburgh, PA where he received the degree in Nuclear Engineering. His career in-cluded work on Nuclear Submarines, Seawolf, Nautilus and the experimental submarines Albacore, X-1 and others. His work took him to the Underwater Naval Sound Laboratory in New London, Connecticut; Holy Loch, Scotland and many years at the Philadelphia Naval Base in charge of research and development of underwater communications. He served as a consultant to the British Royal Navy in submarine warfare and com-pleted his career at the Naval Underwater Systems Center, Newport, RI as Head of the Atlantic Underwater Test and Evaluation Center, West Palm Beach, Florida and Andros Island, Bahamas. He received many awards during his career including the coveted Decibel Award for outstanding service to the Submarine Fleet. He retired in 1989 to Hawthorne, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, H.M. (Matt) Yocum; and survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet Yocum; children, John Yocum, Jr., (Jaynee), Judy Tarr Tartaglia (Paul), Cathy Cham-bers (Curt); grandchildren, Kristina and Aimee Yocum, Matt and Molly Tarr, and Corey and Riley Chambers; and his brother Ezra Phelps Yocum (Linda); and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contribute ns may be made to the First Baptist Church of Hawthorne for the specific use of the sanctuary roof.
Moring Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
