Gainesville - Judith Mattox Nagan, 69, of Gainesville, FL passed away on April 5, 2013. Judy was born in Durham, NC on Valentine's Day 1944, and moved to Gainesville in 1975 from Branford, CT. Judith was an attorney. In 1984, she received her Juris Doctor at the University of Florida and described her years in law school as one of the most exciting intellectual experiences of her life.

Judy practiced first as an Assistant State's Attorney in Ocala, Florida, and later, with the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. In the last phase of her career, she pursued Social Security disability law to represent clients facing challenging socio-economic and health circumstances.

Judy had strong intellectual, analytical, and critical skills, but she also had many artistic interests and talents that she expressed in piano, violin, painting, and sculpture.

She was deeply committed to the principle of human dignity.

She is irreplaceable to her family and will be profoundly missed.

She leaves her devoted husband of 44 years, Winston P. Nagan of Gainesville, FL; her daughters, Jean W. Tennille and husband Ralph Adame of Atlanta, GA and Catherine Nagan Healy of Santa Monica, CA; her son, Winston Arthur Samuel Nagan and fiancé, Denise Dahlgren of Gainesville, FL; her sister, Martha Mattox Yukevich and husband Gerry, and her niece Anna Yukevich of Martha's Vineyard, MA; and her sister-in-law, Thelma Umley of Port Elizabeth, SA.

Graveside services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery at 11 a.m., April 13, 2013. All friends and colleagues welcome to attend and to join in a celebration of her life to be held at the Nagan's home following the ceremony.
