Brevard, NC - Dr Lionel Howell Prescott, 91, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Transylvania Regional Hospital in Brevard after an extended period of declining health.
Born June 9, 1922 in Madisonville, KY, he grew up near New Orleans, LA, the son of Hardy Monroe Prescott and Carolyn Titsworth Prescott. He was preceded in death by his former wife Virginia Blanchard Prescott, brother H.M. Prescott and wife, Rose, and sister Wilma P. Dunn and husband, James.
Serving in the U.S. Navy throughout WWII, he was in combat aboard the USS Vella Gulf in the Atlantic and the USS New York in the Pacific as a Gunners Mate First Class.
On earning his PhD in botany in 1955, he worked in power line plant control for the Tennessee Valley Authority for several years, then taught at Middle Tennessee University, and for the last 35 years of his career was a dedicated teacher of botany and biology at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, FL, also serving there as Dean of Math and Science for several years. He retired in 1990 to Pisgah Forest, NC, residing for the past 4 years in Brevard. He was a trustee emeritus of the Eagle's Nest Foundation. Fascinated by the the beauty of nature, he expressed this in photography, gardening, travel and scientific reading as well as hiking and camping, especially loving our mountains.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Saretta H. (Joffe) Prescott; sons, Lionel Howell Prescott, Jr. with wife, Kelly and Frank McFarland Prescott with wife, Wanda all of Suffolk, VA; daughter, Martha Carolyn Prescott January with husband, Michael of Parker, Co.; 7 grandchildren: Michelle, Stephen and Caroline Prescott, Neil Shea, and Alexander, Zachary and Jacob Joffe.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
