Gainesville - Ruth Jillya Kaplan, 81, of Gainesville, passed away January 2, 2013 at LifePath Hospice after a short illness.

Following graduate study at Columbia University, in a diverse career she worked as a New York fashion model, arts critic for the Wilmington (DE) News-Journal, editor of the Jewish Voice, and program director for the Wilmington Senior Center. She was best known for her own artistic achievements including decades of painting, sculpture, collage, photography and jewelry design. She was a long time president of the Council of Delaware Artists. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was married to chemist Ralph Benjamin Kaplan for 51 years until his passing in 2004.

She is survived by daughter Jenevy Griffin of Valrico, son John Kaplan of Gainesville; son-in-law James Griffin; daughter-in-law Li Ren-Kaplan, and grandchildren Daniel Griffin, Julia Griffin, Carina Kaplan, and Max Kaplan.

Services were held at LifePath Hospice in Sun City. Arrangements by Brandon Cremation & Funeral Services, Inc., Brandon, FL, 813-654-4400.
