Gainesville - Sean Timothy Bird, 39, died from heart failure on March 5, 2013 in Ningbo, China.
Sean was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, October 25, 1973, the son of Patrick J. Bird and Margaret McNamara Bird. In 1985, he moved with his father and step-mother, Mary Gathright Newell, to Gainesville, Florida. There he graduated from Westwood Middle School and from Gainesville High School in 1992, where he lettered in swimming and was a member of the Thespian Club.
Sean then attended the University Florida, 1992-96, B.A. in English Literature, and he spent his last undergraduate summer studying at Cambridge University, England, UK. After his Cambridge experience, Sean found employment as a counselor with the B.U.N.A.C. Work Abroad Program in London. This was followed by a year traveling Europe.
On returning to the US, Sean moved to Denver, Colorado. From there, he went on to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to attend Nova Southwestern University, earning a Jurist Doctorate in May 2003. After law school, he was hired by the law firm Alavi, Bird, Pozzuto, P.A. in Ocala, Florida. He then worked in Gainesville as a workforce advisor for Florida-Works and later as a Probation Officer for the Alachua County Department of Court Services.
In June, 2012, Sean took the opportunity to pursue his long-standing desire to teach English and his love of travel by taking a position with the Talking Street English Institute of the Wisdom Foreign Language School in Ningbo, China.
Sean is survived by his mother Margaret McNamara Bird, Rocky Point, NY, brother Pat Bird, Black Hawk, CO, sister Christine Bird, Ocala, FL, and by his father Patrick J. Bird and step-mother Mary Gathright Newell, Gainesville, FL.
An open memorial service will be held Thursday, May 16, 2013, 5:00 pm, Thomas Center, 302 N.E. 6th Ave. Gainesville, FL.
Remembrance of Sean may be made with a donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County.
