Alachua - Wallace Ray Purvis, Sr., 79, passed away on Wednesday, January 9th, 2013 at his home in Alachua. Ray was the youngest son of the late DeSoto Hunter Purvis and Mary Corinne (Layfield) Purvis. Ray was born in Gainesville on April 3rd, 1933, lived in Kissimmee, Florida as a child, and graduated from Gainesville High School in 1951. Following military service in Germany with the US Army, Ray returned to Alachua County, where he met the love of his life, Bettye Harrington. They married in 1956 and made Alachua their home ever since, happily married for 54 years. Bettye predeceased Ray by two years, almost to the day.

Mr. P, as he was affectionately known by all, spent his early career as an insurance investigator, and then became a small business owner, US Postal Service employee, and Purchasing Agent for Ray's Metal Works. His latest venture has been as the enthusiastic supporting partner of Glenn Bob's BBQ along with his son, Glenn. Ray is survived by his two sons, Ray Purvis, Jr. (Butch) of Tallahassee and Charles Glenn Purvis (Glenn Bob) of Alachua; two beloved daughters-in-law, Jennifer Rader Purvis (Jennie), and Margarita Vazquez Purvis (Rita); two well-loved grandchildren, Elizabeth Kay Purvis (Beth) and Hunter Alexander Purvis (Hunter); and two brothers, Bill F. Purvis of Hawthorne, and Alton L. Purvis of Weirsdale.

Funeral arrangements include a Community Visitation on Sunday, January 13th, from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Evans-Carter Funeral Home in High Springs, Florida. There will be a Memorial Service graveside at Newnansville Cemetery in Alachua on Monday, January 14th, at 11:00 AM. All are invited to a Celebration of Life lunch and party following the memorial service at the home of Glenn and Margarita at 14909 NW 107th Terrace, Alachua, Florida. Flowers may be sent to the Evans-Carter Funeral Home, High Springs. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Haven Hospice in Gainesville, Florida in the name of Bettye and Ray Purvis.
