CARLSON, ALVIN
BERTRAM
Alvin (Al) Bertram Carlson passed away at Brandywine Senior Living Center at Longwood in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, on May 5, 2012, surrounded by family.
He was born November 30, 1924, in Jamestown, NY, where he graduated from high school in 1942. Al and his wife Dorothy (Eggleston) were married for nearly 68 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Bertha (Sandquist) Carlson, brothers, William (Birgit & Carolyn) and Arthur (Milly) Carlson, sister Dorothy (Alden) Carlson, and a granddaughter Laura Anne Carlson.
Al is survived by wife Dorothy, sons Daniel (Anne) of Johnson City, TN, and David (Kim) of Medina, OH, and daughter Diane (Tim) Crozier of West Chester, PA; sister Alberta Larson; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Carlson, Karin (Mike) Lombardi, Daniel Carlson; Megan, Allison and Timothy Crozier; Abby Frech, Catherine and Christine Carlson) and two great grandchildren Trevor and Emma Lombardi.
During the Second World War, Al served on the minesweeper USS Toucan in the Pacific theater from 1942 through 1946, and married Dorothy on May 27, 1944.
After the war, the family owned and operated Alden's Fine Food restaurant in Jamestown. Al worked for Nationwide Insurance from 1957 until he retired in 1988, working the New York region in Buffalo, Syracuse and Albany; Columbus, OH, and Gainesville, FL. He achieved recognition as a Certified Life Underwriter (CLU), sales manager and personnel manager. He and Dorothy retired to Gainesville, FL.
During his lifetime, Al was involved in the Masonic Lodge for 55 years, volunteered for the Lakewood NY Fire Department, was a member of the Jamestown Kiwanis, served on the Board of Directors for the Ronald McDonald House in Gainesville, and was actively involved in the Tip-Off Booster Club at the University of Florida. He enjoyed more than 20 years of the Florida Gators' football and basketball, and played golf regularly.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him for his support and love of family, his devotion to God and his unwavering humor.
A private family burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Jamestown NY.
