Palatka - Jack Victor Smiley, 74, of Palatka passed away at Shands at The University of Florida on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 following an extended illness. He was born in New Orleans, LA and just recently relocated to Palatka coming from Melrose.

He was a tank operator in the United States Army while stationed in Germany. He worked many years for Alltel Communications and was the Director of Network Operations. He invented "Insta-drop", a temporary service wire for home phone service. There was not a task he could not do. He loved rebuilding cars, fishing, golfing and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Trafton Millard Smiley, Sr. and Mable Smiley; a brother, Millard Smiley, and a nephew, John Smiley.

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Linda Smiley of Palatka; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael Trafton and Kimbi Smiley of Palatka; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Dennis Lord of Lake City and Nancy and Robert "Bob" Van Pelt of Jacksonville; one brother and sister-in-law, James "Jimmy" and Terry Smiley of Mocksville, NC; seven grandchildren and spouses, Kortni and Ruben Cantu, Dylan Smith, Kelsey Smiley, Kelli Carmichael, Lindsay and Scott Morton, Jake Van Pelt, and Faith Van Pelt; three-great grandchildren, Devon Daughtry, Lucas Morton and Caleb Morton and two on the way (Gracelynn Cantu and Daylan Daughtry).

A memorial service with military honors bestowed by the United States Army will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Masters Funeral Home in Palatka with Pastor Buddy Lynch officiating. No calling hours are scheduled. To honor and celebrate his life a Tribute Video will be shown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Francis Baptist Church, 155 County Road 309C, Palatka, FL 32177.
