Gainesville - Alceste G. Cornaro of Gainesville, Florida died on January 12, 2013 at age 94. He was born in Marlboro, MA on May 1, 1918. During the depression he joined the C.C.C. at Fort Stevens, OR and in Western, MA for two years. Shortly after WWII began he enlisted in the Army. After attending radio schools he became a radio/DF operator serving in the 137th Signal Radio Intelligence Co. which eventually served as radio intelligence in European operations. He was a sergeant in charge of a mobile unit which served along the 9th Army front including duty in the Bulge. He was honorably discharged on October 5, 1945 and soon after went to work for Army intelligence in Washington D.C. and then he transferred into the Air Traffic Control at Washington National Airport retiring after 32 years of service. He was a life member of VFW Post #2811 and DAV Gator Post #90.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Corrine Finley Cornaro; sons, Adrian of Gainesville, FL and Stephen of Phoenix, AZ; granddaughters, Mishka Cole and husband Mark and Heather Mohd; several great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Alice of Dorchester, MA and brothers, Marco and wife Mary of North Easton, MA and Alfred and wife Sandy of Virginia Beach, VA. Preceding him in death were his parents, Achille and Sylvia Cornaro and a brother, Robert of Dorchester, MA.
Arrangements are under the care of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 404 North Main Street. Mr. Cornaro will be cremated with a private burial in Memorial Park Central Cemetery. There will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606, in his memory.
