PEARL STONEFIELD

Genevieve Pearl Stonefield Thomas was born to Albert Andrew and Minerva Estelle Hurrae Stonefield on November 4, 1915, on a farm in the Township of Alvwood, Itasca County, Minnesota (13 miles east of Blackduck and 10 miles south of Northome).

Genevieve graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, and received her Master's in Nursing from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Achieving the rank of Captain in the Army Nurse Corp, she was stationed at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, during WWII, caring for soldiers wounded in battle and also training new nurses. She continued there for some time after the war as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and then resumed her lengthy career with the Veterans Administration Hospitals.

In 1964, while working at the VA Hospital in Dublin, Georgia, Genevieve met and married Joseph Edward Thomas of Macon, GA. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Micanopy and Genevieve was hired by Malcolm Randall as a Nurse Anesthetist at the VA Hospital in Gainesville until retirement.

She was a very active member of St Augustine Church & Catholic Student Center, and later became a member of St. Patrick Parish.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph and survived by her adopted son, Father Anthony Michaelraj of Tamil Nadu, India, nieces Maggie Moran Hurd of Arnold, MD., Sally Moran Hoge of Madison, GA., Jody Moran Hatcher of Milledgeville, GA, Mrs. Marilyn Goldstone of Grafton ND, Muriel Dinsmore of Springfield, OR, Odetta Hughes of Clatskanie, OR, Joe Moran of Macon, GA., two great nieces and one great nephew.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 500 NE 16th Avenue, with Fr. Roland Julien as celebrant. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the church. Burial will take place in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell with military honors at a later date.
