John J. Benfield, 90, born in Salem, OH on Sept. 20, 1923, passed away on July 13, 2014 in Chiefland, FL. John grew up in St. Petersburg, FL, where he met and married the late Betty Louise Williams.

He is survived by their seven children: Kathleen, John Jr. (Mary), Paul (Caren), Patricia Bowers (Ray), Kenneth, Susan Crise (Albert), and James. He is also survived by 8 grand-children, 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

John served in the Navy during World War II and Korea. He retired from the Navy Re-serve as QMCM in 1981, after 38 years of military service. He was employed by the United States Postal Service in St. Petersburg for 37 years, before retiring in 1983.

John enjoyed woodworking and building models. In his retirement years he enjoyed the quiet life of the country in Old Town, FL.

John was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Chiefland, FL.

The family would like to thank the staff of nurses and doctors at Haven Hospice for the special care and support they provided.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Haven Hospice or St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Chiefland, FL.

Visitation and funeral will take place at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Chiefland, FL on Wednesday, July 23rd. Visitation at 9:00 am, followed by funeral mass at 10:00 am. He will be buried at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell with military honors at 2:30 pm.
