Sidney Davis Martin passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 3, 2010. He was 55. Sidney was born in Gainesville, Florida to Sid and Elizabeth Martin of Hawthorne, Florida.

Sid grew up in Hawthorne and graduated from Hawthorne High School as an All State Athlete and attended Newberry College in South Carolina on a football scholarship. He was also a member of Alpha Tau Omega. He graduated from Newberry College in 1976 and returned to Gainesville and began a career in insurance which he continued throughout his life. Sidney was above all and excellent father to not only his own 3 sons, but also a father figure too many other young men in our community. Sidney was an avid Gator Fan who attended all gator football and basketball games from a very young age. He met his Chicago Gator Girl, Sally, in 1976 and they went on to marry in 1982. Sid loved to call sports talk radio and talk with Steve as often as he could. He coached football at Northwest Boys Club and loved being involved with P.K. Yonge's basketball and football programs up until his death. Sid was kind and generous and donated all of his organs so that other families could enjoy more time on this earth with their loved ones.

Sidney leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 28 years, Sally, his three sons, James John (Taylor), Jeremy Weathers and Elliott Larkin Martin; mother, Elizabeth Giddens; brother, John (Kathy); nephews, Andy, Jason and Ben; brother, Bill (Kathy); nephews, Steve and Drew; nieces, Bella and Camille, his P.K. Yonge Family and many, many friends in the community who will miss his southern charm and wisdom. Please remember Sidney by becoming an organ donor and giving the gift of life.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 6th at 1:00pm at the WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA CHAPEL. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the P.K. Yonge Sports Boosters, 1080 S.W. 11th Street, Gainesville, FL 32601.
