GODDARD, RAY E.

Dr. Ray E. Goddard, age 88, passed away in Gainesville on October 29, 2010. Born in Lakeland, Florida on September 28, 1922, he married Virginia King in 1943.

After three years in the army (including overseas duty), he returned to complete a master's degree in forestry at the University of Florida (1948). He then worked for the Texas Forest Service and earned his Ph.D. (1960) in plant genetics from Texas A. & M. That same year, Dr. Goddard joined the University of Florida faculty as director of its tree-improvement program. His research and experimentation led to major increases in slash pine productivity. Upon retirement in 1984, he was named Professor Emeritus, in honor of his long and distinguished service.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia; four daughters, Lane Goddard (David Hatcher); Lucy Goddard-Teel (George Teel); Betsy Jones (Larry Jones); Carolyn Goddard (Steve Stringer); ten grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the Milam Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alachua County Library District, Millhopper Branch 3145 NW 43rd St., Gainesville, FL 32606, in appreciation of the many years of reading pleasure the library provided.
