Mrs. Gloria J. Atkins, age 75, affectionately known as "Pokie" passed away February 12, 2012 at her home in Alachua, FL. She was a member of Bartley Temple United Methodist Church where she served on the Hospitality Committee; and was also a member of the Choir, and United Methodist Women. Ms. Atkins was employed with the Alachua County School Board in Food Services for over thirty years.

She is survived by her children; Vernon Atkins (Juliet), Dwayne Brown (Julie), both of Salinias, CA, Adrienne Aycock, Stone Mountain, GA, Tonia McCray (Michael), Gainesville, Janice Monroe, Brenda Sims, both of Alachua, FL, Bernadette Washington (Ernest), Tallahassee, FL, Michell Martin (Lawrence), Ft. Lauderdale, FL, brother; John Broome, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, three great, great grandchildren, three godchildren; Sherry Flowers, Tiffany Wright, Al Levan, devoted friends Frances Williams and Lorenzo McKinnon.

Funeral service for Mrs. Atkins will be held, 1:00pm, Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Rev. Geraldine W. McClellan, Host Pastor, Rev. Clifford Patrick, Officiating, Rev. Mary Mitchell, Presiding; burial will follow in Grass Lawn Cemetery, Gainesville, FL. Arrangements entrusted to Chestnut Funeral Home, Inc., 18 N.W. 8th Avenue, Gainesville, FL.

Mrs. Atkins will repose in the Chestnut Memorial Chapel on Friday, February 17, 2012 from 2-7pm, and on Saturday at the Church from 12:00noon until the hour of service. Family and friends are asked to meet at the home of her daughter, Tonia Martin, 9101 S. W. 84th Avenue, Gainesville, FL, at 11:45am to form the cortege.
