He left the area when his employment with the Federal Government took him to the Washington D.C. area where he got married and raised his family. He was a charter member of the Senior Cryptologic Executive Service and the Phoenix Society, and retired in 1993 after nearly 40 years of faithful service. He also taught mathematics part-time at Prince Georges Community College in Largo MD and the University of Maryland. Herb returned to Cedar Key in 2003.
