Gainesville - Dr. Cullen W. Banks, 88, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at his home. He was born to Cullen and Estelle Banks of Temple, Texas. The family moved to Florida from Virginia residing in Palatka, FL initially, later moving to Orlando, FL, where he was a graduate of Jones High School, class of 1942. His pre-medical studies were done at Wilberforce University, Xenia (OH) earning his medical degree from Howard University, Washington, DC in 1948. Dr. Banks moved to Gainesville, FL in 1949. He assumed the practice of Dr. Orion T. Ayer and continued to practice for the next 47 years. Dr. Banks was the first Black to have full privileges at Alachua General Hospital and North Florida Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Banks was a life member of the Florida Medical Association, life member of Alachua County Medical Society, having served as Secretary from 1984-86 and Vice President 1986-87. He was also a member of The National Medical Association, Florida State Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association, The American Fertility Society, N.A.A.C.P. (life member) and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He served on the Regional Health Planning Council, was a Founding Trustee of the North Florida Regional Medical Center and received Emeritus status, was a member of OB/GYN Departments at Alachua General Hospital and North Florida Medical Center, served as a member of the Admissions Committee of the Medical School at the University of Florida (1970-1979) and was a member of the Florida Blue Key. He served as volunteer Doctor for Sickle Cell Foundation and volunteer Doctor for Acorn Clinic. Dr. Banks was a member of Greater Bethel A.M.E. church, where he served on the Board of Trustees and in the Choir.
Dr. Banks also received the Martin Luther King Hall of Fame Award, the N.A.A.C.P. Community Service Award, and the Rotary Club Service Above Self Award. In 1996,he received the Florida Medical Association Inc. Certificate of Merit- the highest honor given to any Doctor in the State of Florida.
His memory will live on in the hearts of his loving and devoted wife of fifty-four years, LaKay Banks of Gainesville, Florida, sons Barry Banks (Maritza) of Gainesville, Florida, Dr. Garry Banks of Valparaiso, Florida and daughter Colleen Banks of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Funeral Services for Dr. Banks will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church, 701 S.E. 43rd Street with Rev. Karl V. Smith. Interment will follow in Forest Meadows Central Memorial Park under the care of Chestnut Funeral Home, 18 N.W. 8th Ave., Gainesville FL. Visitation: Friday, 3:00-5:00PM, Chestnut Funeral Home, 6:00-8:00PM, Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church, at which time the family will receive friends. Visitation will be held Saturday at the church one hour before the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Cullen Banks to support the Cullen W. Banks, M.D. Scholarship at the University of Florida College of Medicine.
