JAMES ESTEBAN, 85

LONGWOOD - Mr. James Esteban Masson, 85, resident of Longwood, Florida, and former longtime resident of Gainesville, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Florida Hospital Altamonte.

Mr. Masson was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on November 2, 1927 to the late Esteban Carlos and Julia Jimenez Masson, and lived there for many years before moving to Miami. While there, he worked for Eastern Airlines, where he met Louise "Mickey" Feeger, to whom he was married for 24 years until her death in 1973.

Mr. Masson was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He attended Duke University, and was an enthusiastic Blue Devil fan as well as an avid Florida Gator. He moved to Gainesville with his family in 1956, and started World Travel Service, the first travel agency in Gainesville, and operated that until 1986. He was a longtime member of the Gainesville Rotary Club and of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where he had dedicated the tower bell in memory of his late wife. Mr. Masson had great wit and intellect, was a world traveler, and loved music, art, and writing.

He is survived by four children, Suzanne Louise "Suzy" Masson, of Orlando, James Robert "Jim" Masson, of Gainesville, Darcie Linda Masson, of Miami, and Carmen Nicole (Bill) Schell, of Fort Collins, CO, one grand-daughter, Emma Catherine Schell, of Fort Collins, CO, one brother, Steven Carlos (Donna) Masson, of Miami, two sisters, Sylvia (Lorenzo) Otero, and Elsie Caldwell, both of Miami.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 100 N.E. First Street, Gainesville with Fr. Jeremy Hole officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow the service at Memorial Park East, 3700 S.E. Hawthorne Road, Gainesville.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the , 2119 SW 16th St, Gainesville, FL 32608.
