DR. JOHN (JACK) S., 82
Gainesville - Dr. John (Jack) S. Detweiler, University of Florida, Public Relations Professor Emeritus John Stuart Detweiler, age 82 of Gainesville, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 14, 2013. He was born June 29, 1930 in Denver, Colorado to John Carl and Agnes Veeder Detweiler. In 1952, Jack graduated from the University of Florida and also married his wife of now 60 years, Pat Hylton Detweiler. As a young man he worked for several newspapers, was editor of the Florida Methodist Magazine and was the faculty advisor for The Florida Alligator. In 1965 he moved to Gainesville to work on his doctorate at UF. Jack joined the UF faculty then as well, and served as Chair of the Department of Public Relations from 1987 until he stepped down from full-time teaching in 1992. During his tenure as Chair, the department was ranked among the very best in the country, a distinction that still holds today. The department's student award for professional promise is named in his honor. In 1991, Florida Blue Key honored him with one of its four "Distinguished Faculty Awards" and in 1992, the Gainesville chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association named him the "Public Relations Professional of the Year." Dr. Detweiler retired in 2004. Jack was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and was instrumental in developing their missions program and prison ministry. He also was active in Kairos, the Walk to Emmaus program and many small men's breakfast groups. The hallmarks and guiding influences of his life were his love for God and his love for his family, especially for his wife, Pat.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Detweiler; daughters, Shelley (Gary) Russell and Jacqueline (Jeffrey) Wright; sister, Bonnie Jean Jeffers and grandchildren, Jamie (Adam) Greene, Jennifer (Brian) Lancaster, John Wright and Christina Wright.
A Memorial Service will be conducted Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church, 4000 NW 53rd Avenue, with Dr. Dan G. Johnson officiating.
