Melrose - James Charles "J.C." Smith, 80, of Melrose, Florida, died Wednesday, July 24, 2013 in the Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, following a long illness.

Mr. Smith was born on September 28, 1932 in Swansea, South Carolina to the late Roy L. and Victoria "Sally" Smith. He joined the U. S. Army and went on to serve for 28 years, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer, having served in the Korean War and two tours in Vietnam. After his retirement from the military, he began working for the Florida Department of Revenue, retiring again in 1992. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #230 Hawthorne.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen G. Smith; five children, Marsi Benson, Rev. Doug Cutts, Lisa Cutts, Charlene Williamson and Bridget Rountree; four sisters, Ora Robie, Ruby Hutchins, Gail Hutchins, and Della Atkinson; and one brother, Willie Smith, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 11:00 A.M., in the Eden Baptist Church, 2405 SE CR 219A, Hawthorne, with Rev. Doug Cutts, officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Hawthorne Cemetery.
