Gainesville - Ruth Faulds Taylor (90), beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, cherished friend and honored teacher passed away on August 2, 2013 at her residence at Oak Hammock in Gainesville, Florida.
Ruth was born on April 30, 1923 in Clearwater, Florida, fifth child of Norval Merritt and Almira Rogers Faulds. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Melisse and Jeanette and brothers Morris and Vincent. Her youngest brother, Stanley (wife Betty) Faulds of Wilmington, Delaware, survives. She will be missed by her daughters Jennie (husband John) Claflin of Springfield, Illinois and Penelope (husband Danny Schmidt) Taylor of Stuart, as well as grandsons Marcus Ciani, Zachary Claflin and Tristan Schmidt, great-granddaughter Ciara Ciani, devoted niece Kate Cunningham and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
After graduating from Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University) in 1944 with majors in Spanish and Chemistry, Ruth worked at a research laboratory at the University of Florida in Gainesville where she helped to develop alternative uses for tung oil products. She married Carlis Taylor in June, 1945. They later divorced. After her children reached school age Ruth earned a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Florida and, in 1955, began her 30-year teaching career, sharing her love of science with hundreds of high school students first in Gainesville and later Ft. Lauderdale, mentoring many to pursue careers in research and medicine.
