BUSBY, JOE NEIL, 92
Gainesville - Joe Neil Busby, Gainesville, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Haven Hospice's E.T. York Care Center. He was born in Hart County, Georgia, April 9, 1921 and was 92 years of age. He proudly served in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII and was a member of CBI. After WWII he was employed with Florida State Plant Board and was the first to inventory every citrus tree in the state of Florida. Recalled to Korea, he flew fifty bombing missions during the War and was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross. He was promoted to Lt. Colonel. He was Director of the Cooperative Extension Service for the State of Florida and retired Dean Emeritus. After retirement from the Extension Service, he was then appointed Chief of Party for U.S.A.I.D. and University of Florida to develop a land grant University for Cameroon, Africa. His graduate and undergraduate degrees were all from the University of Florida. Mr. Busby was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church. On January 16, 2013, Joe and his wife Elta celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Elta passed away the following month.
He was preceded in death by his wife Elta Catherine Busby, son, James Lon Busby in 1963, grandson, Glen Albert Busby, Jr., in 1985 and granddaughter, Kemberly Ann Holton in 1989.
He is survived by three sons, Joe Earl Busby (Ginny) of Marianna, Glen Albert Busby (Linda) of Gainesville and Jack LaRoe Busby (Debbie) of Alachua; two daughters, Kay Ellen Kinney (Riley) of Tallahassee and Carol Jane Copeland (Johnny) of Sarasota; brother, John M. Busby of Jacksonville, FL; 14 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, 3146 NW 13th Street, on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 2:30 p.m., with The Rev. Drew Marshall officiating. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Memorial Park East, 3700 SE Hawthorne Road.
