Gainesville - William "Bill" Jefferson Roper, age 88 of Gainesville, FL passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the E.T. York Hospice Care Center. He was born in Shelby, North Carolina on July 14, 1925 to the late Kelly and Rose Johnson Roper. Bill served in the US Army, in the European Theatre during WWII, receiving two bronze stars for gallantry. Mr. Roper worked as a carpenter in residential construction. He was a great golfer and enjoyed taking care of his lawn and a garden and watching NASCAR races.
Preceded in death by a daughter, Becky Ann Griswald, and a son, Morris Wayne Castell. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Doris A. Roper; sons, William J. (AE Cha) Roper, Jr. and Steve M. (Ann) Roper, a brother Dean "Duck" Roper, one granddaughter Suzette (David) Sherouse, and two great grandsons Dillon and Carson Sherouse.
Graveside Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at Forest Meadows East, 3700 SE Hawthorne Road Gainesville, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bill's name may be made to Haven Hospice 4200 NW 90th Blvd. Gainesville, FL 32606.
