Gainesville - Mr. John Wilson "Jack" Puffer, Jr., 92, resident of Gainesville, Florida, died Saturday, November 30, 2013, at his home, following a long illness.

Mr. Puffer was a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, born on race day, May 30, 1921 to the late John W. and Catherine Puffer. He moved with his family to Florida in 1926, first settling in Miami and graduating from Miami Beach High School, Class of 1939. Mr. Puffer attended the University of Florida and the University of Miami, before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet; after receiving his wings he went to North Africa, flying Spitfires in combat in Operation Torch. After the war, Jack began flying for National Airlines in 1946, and later for Pan American Airways, where he was flying the DC-10 on transatlantic routes at his retirement in 1981.

In 1941, he married Annis Spring, whom he first met in kindergarten in Indianapolis, and with whom he most recently celebrated his 72nd wedding anniversary. They moved to Gainesville in 1989, where they were charter members of Community Presbyterian Church in McIntosh, and he was an avid Gator booster. Mr. Puffer was preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Puffer Lindsey.

He is survived by his wife, Annis Spring Puffer, of Gainesville; two daughters, Julie Puffer (Dan) Smith, of Ft. Lauderdale, and Jenny Puffer (Dale) Elkins, of Tampa; one son, John W. (Blanche) Puffer, III, of Tampa; one brother, Frank Puffer, of St. Augustine. Seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren and a fifth great great grandchild on the way.

A memorial service with full military honors will be conducted Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at 11:00 A. M., in the Community Presbyterian Church, 20098 North U.S. 441, McIntosh, with Pastor Scott Simmons, officiating and Pastor Jim Walkup, assisting. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Presbyterian Church, or to Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606.
