James H. “Harold” Underwood Obituary

James H. "Harold" Underwood, age 71 of Talmo, Ga., gave his final salute to his eternal commander of the Army of the Lord and joined with his beloved wife, Jennie, in Heaven on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at his home with his daughter, Donna, and his son-in-law, Franklin J. Spivey, at his side.
He was born in Pendergrass, Ga., on Oct. 14, 1942, served in the U.S. Army. While he was with the 2nd Battalion 27th Infantry, he was credited with forming the Wolfhounds, which utilized canine officers in jungle warfare against hostile forces in Vietnam. Among his many achievements during his nine years of service to his country was awarded a Bronze Star as well as other commendations for outstanding meritorious service.
There is a wing at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga., named after Staff Sgt. Underwood that holds his field notes and other memorabilia of his training methods. He also retired from General Motors Corp.
His only child survives him: Donna and son-in-law Franklin J. Spivey; along with twin grandsons and their wives, Franklin J. (Jamie) Spivey II and Annabelle, and James E. (Eddie) Spivey and Kimberly and their daughter Sarah Elasea (Ela), which was Harold's great-grandchild and the light of his life. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Freddie Pethel and Shirley.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at the Little-Davenport Chapel with the Rev. Franklin J. Spivey officiating. Interment will follow in the Talmo Baptist Church Cemetery; the family will receive friends from 2-7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
