Thomas Clyde Elrod Obituary

Thomas Clyde Elrod, 86, died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at Wellspring Retirement Community.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. in Richardson Auditorium at Wellspring. A reception and visitation will follow.

Clyde was born in Gainesville, Ga., on Aug. 4, 1926, to the late Jack Harrington Elrod and Eva Gillespie Elrod. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 62 years, Julia Pinnix Elrod.

Following graduation from Gainesville High School, Clyde attended North Georgia College, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He then served in the Army for two years, stationed in the Philippines. After he completed his military service, he graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in industrial engineering.

While completing the Junior Executive Program at General Shoe Corp., he met his wife, Julia. After their marriage in 1950, they moved to Greensboro, Julia's hometown, for Clyde to start Elrod Construction Co. He built custom homes and buildings throughout the city until his retirement in 1976. He was known for his integrity and high quality work. Clyde helped found the Home Builder's Association of Greensboro, where he served as President, and was an active member until his retirement.

Many benefited from Clyde's quiet generosity. He gave his time and money to numerous organizations. He was a dedicated board member of Urban Ministry and The Salvation Army. He served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and member of many committees at First Baptist Church. He was a devoted, unpaid consultant on numerous building projects throughout the city, including Urban Ministry, Wellspring and the Greensboro Country Club. He lovingly delivered meals for Meals on Wheels, and visited countless nursing home residents.

Clyde was an avid tennis player, winning both club and city championships. He was also a lifelong dog lover who spoiled his dogs rotten. Perhaps he will be best remembered for his ever-present and beautiful smile. He could light up a room.

Clyde is survived by his three daughters, Leigh Yost (Eddie) and Penny Summers (Mark), Greensboro; Lisa Reid (David), Raleigh; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his brother, Jack H. Elrod, Atlanta; and his sister, Elizabeth E. Martin, Gainesville. His family gratefully acknowledges the kindness, competence and generosity of the staff at Wellspring Retirement Community.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Urban Ministry or The Salvation Army.
