Grover A. Stephens, age 83, of Gainesville passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at UPAC Lanier following an extended illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Brian Malcom and the Rev. Earl Pirkle will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Stephens was born April 4, 1931, in Jackson County, Ga., to the late John Stephens and Carrie Ellis Stephens. He was retired from the U.S. Army with 26 years of service, then after retirement worked for city of Gainesville with Alta Vista Cemetery for 16 years. Grover was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, J.A. Stephens; and two of his children, Shirley Jean Stephens and Darrell Eugene Stephens.
Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gladys Mooney Stephens of Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and James Vanhooser of Evans, Ga.; son, Donald Stephens of Gainesville, Renae Stephens of Gainesville and Douglas and Barbara Stephens of Gainesville; grandchildren, Amanda Justice, Jason and Wendy Smith, Scott Frady, Beth and Paul Parker, Shang and Stacy Frady and Dwayne and Randi Frady; great-grandchildren, C.J., Brittany, Andrew, Reilly, Rayna, Mason, Dylan, Hayden, Cody, Ali and Ella; sister, Annie Mae Westmoreland of Gainesville; sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Ted Bishop of Dawsonville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Jeanette Stephens of Gillsville, Edward and Martha Stephens of Flowery Branch, and Horace and Thelma Jo Stephens of Talmo; sisters-in-law, Beulah Ewing and Lula Sweat, both of Flowery Branch; and a number of nieces and nephews.
