Robert James “Bob” Lathem Obituary
Robert James "Bob" Lathem, age 90, passed away Jan. 31, 2013, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness. He died peacefully with family at his bedside.
Bob was born in Gainesville on May 11, 1922, to the late Pearl and Lee Lathem. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia, class of 1943. While at UGA, he was active in campus life and held many jobs, including working at the campus library and concession stand. He was a member of the Gridiron Secret Society. He served as a first lieutenant and was promoted to captain in the United States Army. He served during World War II in the Signal Corps in the Philippines and Japan. Bob was the retired chairman and co-owner of L & R Farms, Inc. He was involved in the egg industry until his retirement in 1991 and his son, David, continues the tradition of operating the family business. He served as president of the Georgia Egg Association and as a board member for the Georgia Egg Commission for many years. Bob remained active in his retirement, continuing to attend UGA football games, meeting with friends and managing rental properties. He was an active member of the Anglers Sunday School class at First Baptist Church, Gainesville.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robert James "Jimmy" Lathem Jr.; parents, Pearl and Lee Lathem; sister, Nell Dickey; and nephew, Don Dickey.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Abbie Virginia; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Lisa Lathem of Maysville; grandchildren, Evan and Kelly Lathem of Gainesville, Brent and Anne Marie Braham of Gainesville, Charlie and Sara Walls of Nashville, Tenn., Jenny Lathem of Charleston, S.C., Tyler Lathem of Athens and Andrew Lathem of Maysville; two great-grandchildren, Miller Lathem and Ridge Braham; and nephew, Duane Dickey and his wife, Dorothy of Cocoa Beach, Fla.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, from 1-3 p.m. at Little & Davenport Funeral Home, 355 Dawsonville Highway, Gainesville, GA.
A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of First Baptist Church, 751 Green St., Gainesville, with Dr. Bill Coates and Dr. Bart McMillan officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to caregivers Pat Abernathy, Tara Williams and Krissy Thornsberry for all of their help.
