Harold Thornhill

The Rev. Harold Thornhill, age 82, of Flowery Branch, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleve and Flarra Burel Thornhill; brothers, Jesse Thornhill and Bonnie Thornhill; and sisters-in-law, Mildred Thornhill and Sue M. Harris.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Montgomery Thornhill of Flowery Branch; daughter and son-in-law, Lee Ann and Anthony Duncan of Flowery Branch; grandson, Blake Duncan of Flowery Branch; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joyce and Rex Tucker of Buford; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, J.W. and Gail Montgomery of Buford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Rev. Thornhill was born June 15, 1930, in Buford where he was a lifelong resident. He was a 1948 graduate of Buford High School where he played football under Coach Riden. He was a U. S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He was retired from Federal National Mortgage Association in Atlanta after 30 years of service, and after his retirement, he worked for Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford for 14 years where he assisted with numerous funerals and visitations. Harold was saved, by God's grace, in May of 1954, at General Motors Assembly Plant, and in December of that same year, he married the love of his life, Barbara Montgomery.

He was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church in Buford. In the late 1970s, Harold was called to pastor Antioch Baptist Church, Cleveland, and also Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Cleveland. Although he was an avid Braves fan and Georgia Bulldog fan, his true love was in serving the Lord and being with his family. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Hutchins, the Rev. Blake Duncan and the Rev. Philip Robinson officiating. Interment and graveside service will follow at Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Buford, with the Rev. Jerry Bennett officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-9 p.m.
