Janice M. Ball

Obituary Condolences

Janice M. Ball, Dec. 11, 1925-Feb. 9, 2013, daughter of Dr. Edward and Edith Ward; wife of William D. Ball; mother of David W. Ball, Christine Sullivan and Brian W. Ball; grandmother of Megan and Conor Sullivan, Allison Ball, Michael and Jonathan Ball; American Field Service (AFS) mother to Michiho Tanaka.

Janice Ball was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was deeply admired by many for her keen intelligence, cheerful disposition, insatiable curiosity, kind heart, gracious manner, steadfast courage and generous spirit. She always looked for the best in others, and almost always found it. She lived life well, surrounded by family and a wide, ever expanding circle of friends.

Janice majored in zoology at University of Michigan. Upon graduating, she became a social worker in Detroit and Lansing, Mich.

After marrying Bill, they lived first in Morristown, N.J., then settled in Geneva, Ill. They raised three children, twins Dave and Chris, and Brian. When her children were older, Janice went back to college and earned her teaching certificate. She taught middle school science for the next decade. In her personal life, Janice never stopped being a student and a teacher.

Bill and Janice moved to Gainesville, Ga., in 1980. They lived on Lake Lanier, and enjoyed an active outdoor life that included boating, skiing and golf. After Bill's untimely death in 1995, Janice began to travel widely and saw much of the world. She was an intrepid adventurer, engaged, upbeat, adaptable and always ready for the next experience. She was affectionately known in the family as "Grandma Go Go." In later years, Janice helped care for her mother-in-law, Marjorie Buytendorp, until Marjorie's passing at age 100.

Janice was a member of many organizations, including the First United Methodist Church of Gainesville, Chattahoochee Country Club, P.E.O., BULLI, Lanier Women's Club, stock club, swim group, movie group and bunco group.

She was a wonderful, loyal friend and mentor to many women. She will be greatly missed, but her spirit will carry on through the lives she touched.

Janice is survived by her children and grandchildren, her niece, Susan Wojtowicz, Orlando, Fla.; and her brother-in-law, Ercell Carley (aged 95) of Troy, Mich.

Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church Chapel in Gainesville on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. Dr. Terry Walton will officiate. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour.
