Joe David Holcomb, 86, a lifetime resident of Chicopee Mill Village, passed away at his home on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Carol Dean Holcomb; two daughters, Carol Denise Hall and husband, Jeffrey E. Hall, Albany, Ga.; and Dale Holcomb Stone and husband, Ken Stone, Franklin, Tenn.; granddaughters, Courtney Humes, Amber Herring and Brittany Cook; and five great-grandsons; sister, Roberta Irvin, Lawrenceville; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Martha Holcomb, Gainesville.
Joe is preceded in death by his daughter, Dawn Holcomb Wilson; and his sister, Doris Cook.

Born and raised in Chicopee, Joe served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and returned to marry Dean. He went to work for Chicopee Manufacturing Co., where he was employed for 39 years.

Joe lived a simple life. His life exhibited his belief of honor and integrity. He believed that your word was your bond, and he lived by that creed. He survived a household of four women, and had a keen sense of humor. He relished sharing his stories, jokes and peanut brittle with others.

For many years, Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed walking the courses. He was a regular at Chicopee Woods. He served as treasurer for Chicopee United Methodist Church for many years. Joe served unofficially as the Chicopee Village historian.

He was a gentle and kind man who quietly helped others in need. He saw things to do and to get done, and applied a do-it-yourself approach. Joe was the one to call for fixing things, finding solutions or just rigging something to work.
