Obituary Condolences

Dr. Kathleen "Suzy" Gruenhagen, age 77, of Dahlonega, Ga., passed away May 8, 2014.

Suzy was a New Jersey native who had lived in Dahlonega since 1992, where she was a faculty member at North Georgia College teaching special education subjects until retiring in 2002. Even after retiring, she continued to teach and interact with her special education graduate students. Suzy was an active member of St. Luke's Catholic Church. She was truly a pillar of the parish, a founding member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society, and the memorial garden. She was tirelessly active as a servant leader in so many ways for so many years. Her passion for gardening is evident not only at St. Luke's but at various places around Dahlonega where she and her fellow master gardeners have applied their talents. Never one to sit idle, Suzy has traveled widely in both Europe and the United States. When at home, Suzy enjoyed reading and entertaining, most often hosting dinner and book club groups. Suzy leaves behind a legacy of total commitment to her church, community and scores of friends that loved her deeply.

"Suzy" was the daughter of the late Ernest James Hartelius and Francis Jeannette Hartelius. Her husband, Eppler W. Gruenhagen, precedes her in death. She is survived by three daughters, Karen Gruenhagen, Tampa Fla., Amy (Bob) Nugent, Binghamton, N.Y., Jane (Stuart) House, Coral Springs, Fla.; six grandchildren, Meghan, Bryce, Brendan and Connor Nugent, Sara and Allison House; stepmother, Boude Mason-Hartelius; and stepsister, Penny Peed, both of Hampton, Va.

The family will receive friends at the Banister Funeral Home of Dahlonega, 2068 Highway 19 North, on Thursday, May 15, 2014, from 6-8 p.m.

A funeral Mass for Suzy is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Dahlonega. Father Neil Dhabliwala will officiate.

Following the interment at Dahlonega Memorial Park, a reception will be held at St. Luke's Parrish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Memorial Garden Fund at St. Luke's Catholic Church, 91 N. Park St., Dahlonega, GA 30533.
