Mr. Benny Alton Harkins, age 83, of Cleveland passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Memorial Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Dewberry Baptist Church No. 2 with inurnment to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Darin Cain, the Rev. Robert Nix and the Rev. Andee Couson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014, at the funeral home.
Mr. Harkins was born Jan. 16, 1931, in Greenville, S.C., the son of the late John Ernest Harkins and Mandy (Ingram) Harkins. He graduated from Riverbend High School in May of 1948. Following graduation, he became a career military man, serving in the United States Air Force, Army, Georgia Air National Guard, and he worked for the United States Marine Corps, with a stellar career that spanned from 1951 to 1986. He married the love of his life, Gaynell Satterfield, on April 10, 1955, celebrating 59 years of marriage. He was a lifetime member of Dewberry Baptist Church No. 2. Mr. Harkins resided in Albany, Ga., from 1966 until 2001, where he earned multiple certifications from the Albany Area Technical School. He then moved to Cleveland, Ga., where he and his wife retired. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gaynell Harkins of Cleveland; daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa Gay (Harkins) and Mark Lindaur, Susan Marie (Harkins) and Randy Luckie; son, Bruce Allen Harkins; grandsons and wives, Randall Brent and Kayla Luckie, Kyle Eric and Jessica Luckie; granddaughter, Breanna Alexandra Harkins; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Rylee, Wyatt, Kinsley and Sophia Luckie; sisters, Ernestine Harkins Wiley and Audrey Harkins Rogers.
