Mr. Virlyn B. Thigpen, age 81, of Flowery Branch passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014, at his residence, following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2014, from the chapel of Memorial Park South Funeral Home with interment following at Memorial Park South Cemetery. The Rev. Scott Crooke will officiate. The family will receive friends noon to 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Memorial Park South Funeral Home.
Mr. Thigpen was born Oct. 12, 1932, to the late Charlie Grover and Zora Webb Thigpen in Soperton, Ga., and was the youngest and last surviving member of seven brothers. He was a member of Blackshear Place Baptist Church, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 255, a retired truck driver for Ryder Distribution and a watchmaker for over 50 years. Mr. Thigpen enjoyed motorcycles, fishing, camping and spending time with his family.
Survivors include: wife of 47 years, Wanda Faye Thigpen; daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly and Craig Cooper of Gainesville, and Denise and Ray Laney of Nicholson; daughter, Debbie Smith of Watkinsville; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
