Alton Lee (Al) Amis, 80, died at home early Sunday morning, May 5, 2013, following an extended illness.

Al was born in Spartanburg, S.C., and adopted by William White (Bill) and Leita Amis in 1937. He grew up in McDonough, Ga., but moved to Dublin, Ga., where he played football and basketball, and graduated from Dublin High School in 1950. After graduation, he attended Georgia Tech in Atlanta, and North Georgia College in Dahlonega. Alton joined the Air Force in 1953, and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He married Beverly Arnau in 1955, and they have two daughters, Kathleen Amis Exley and Angelyn Amis Ashworth. After leaving active service, he continued in the Air Force Reserves until 1959. After Al and Beverly divorced in 1961, Alton became a captain for Eastern Airlines, where he met and married Janice Knable. Al and Jan have three children, Michael William Amis, Melinda (Mindy) Amis Harkins and Douglas Edward Amis.

In 1975, Al was contacted by his birth family and was reunited with his birth mother, Mary Barnett Kirby, and her children, Jane Gowan, Lois Harmon, Buster Kirby, Lucretia Donnahoo, Francis Robinson, Joyce Willis, Robert Kirby and Wayne Kirby, and the families have remained in contact since that time.

Alton and Janice divorced in 1971, and in 1982, he and Beverly Arnau Amis remarried, and have lived together in Hall County ever since. Alton flew for Eastern Airlines for 27 years and retired in 1989.

Alton was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting, fishing and crossword puzzles. In addition to his widow and children, Alton is survived by 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six half-siblings.

The family will be receiving visitors at Little & Davenport funeral home, Gainesville, Ga., Thursday, May 9, at 10 a.m., and there will be a memorial service celebrating Al's life beginning at 11 a.m.
