Claxton V. Dowell, 93, of Galax, Va., passed away Monday, June 30, 2014, at his home.
He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., to the late Charles and Ida Dowell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emily; and his first wife, Drema; and the mother of his daughters and special friend Myrtle Parks.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He lived 30 plus years in Portsmouth, Va., where he retired from the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. The call of the mountains drew him to Galax where he lived for 35 years, chopping wood and making crafts with Emily.
Survivors include his three daughters, Sue Dorson, Ann Cerza, Paige Spruill and their husbands John, James and Frank; six grandchildren, Pete Dorson (Robin), Jamie Wigginton (George), Brian Cerza (Charlene), Jimmy Cerza (Janet), Carlie Spruill, Chase Spruill; and 10 great-grandchildren; his brother, Charles; sister-in-law, Mae; step-daughter. Sherry Stilley; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Adams officiating. Burial will be private. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
Donations may be made to the Pipers Gap Rescue Squad.
Claxton was a devoted husband, a selfless father, a helpful neighbor, a loyal Patriot, and a man of faith. "Well done, good and faithful servant."
