Dewey Carl Sturdivant, 85, of Galax, Va., passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 19, 2012, in the Golden Living-Blue Ridge Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was born in Akron, Ohio on Nov. 1, 1926, to Lynn and Alla Rose Wingate Sturdivant.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Dora L. Sexton Sturdivant; and son, Thomas Dewey Sturdivant.
He entered the Galax Volunteer Fire Department in 1969 and had 43 years of service to the department.
He was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Gary Boring and Betty and Charlie McDaniel, all of Galax, Va.; grandchildren, Pam Phillips, Thomas Dewey (T.J.) Sturdivant Jr., Joe Honeycutt and Ben Honeycutt; great-granddaughter, Jaiden Honeycutt; sister, Ruth Hollaway of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers, Fred Sturdivant of Stuarts Draft, Va., and Herbert Sturdivant of Independence, Va.; sisters-in-law and spouse, Frances Roberts of Pofftown, N.C., Joyce and Bob Reavis of Galax, Va., Ollie Sturdivant of Sparta, N.C., and Wanda Sturdivant of Independence, Va; brother-in-law, Bill Snyder of Dayton, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and special friend, Louise Diamond.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the old Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Rev. James Cowley officiating. Burial followed in the Monta Vista Cemetery with rites by the Galax Volunteer Fire Department.
The family received friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.
