Ella Kate (Katie) Johnson Cooley, 88, of Hillsville, passed away on Monday, Oct.28, 2013, at her home.
She was born in Virginia to the late Andrew Cowan Johnson Sr. and Ella Eliza Leftwich Johnson.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Franklin Cooley Sr.; daughter, Jeanne Driver; grandson, Charles Eugene Cooley; six sisters; and three brothers.
Cooley attended Milligan College and worked at Sprague Electric, owned a restaurant, and was a receptionist at a doctor's office.
She was a member of Hillsville Christian Church and the VFW
Ladies Auxiliary. She loved painting, ballroom dancing, gardening and crafts.
Survivors include her children, Ellis Franklin Cooley Jr. and wife, Maria of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Roger A. and Jan H. Cooley of Hillsville, Dennis P. and Terri Cooley of Kernersville, N.C., Susie Cooley of Hillsville and special friend, Reid Coggins of Concord, N.C., and Teresa and Patrick Sullivan of Stokesdale, N.C.; grandchildren, Dianna Puhr (Josh), Heather Cooley, Darrell Driver, Rachel Cooley, Haley Cooley, Jessica Dillow (Kenny), Justin Sifford, Ashley Shoaf, Jon Shoaf and Tess Sullivan; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at the Hillsville Christian Church at 11 a.m. with Pastor Amanda Hatfield Moore officiating. Burial followed in the Coal Creek Cemetery. The family received friends at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, from 6 until 8 p.m.
