Mary Alice Barton, 97, died Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at Grayson Nursing and Rehab in Independence.
She was born Nov. 10, 1916, to Willie and Rose Osborne of Mouth of Wilson, Va., where she grew up.
She married Edgar Bryce Barton in 1935and became a pastor's wife. She made every parsonage a home for her family and all other in the congregation and community.
She loved teaching Sunday School and serving the church families. Most of all she enjoyed reading her Bible. To everyone who knew her, she was wise and always instructed others that our faith in the Lord was the only way to live with direction, understanding and joy.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, the Rev. Edgar Bryce Barton; and her daughter, Nila Elizabeth Barton Foster.
Survivors include her son, Bill (Glenna) Barton, of Shady Valley, Tenn.; sister, Vila Lee Barton of Galax; her sister-in-law, Frances Testerman of Elk Creek; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Saturday, June 21, 2014, in Reins-Sturvidant Funeral Chapel, Independence with the Rev. Edward Porter and Pastor Chuck Barton officiating. Interment followed in Grubbs Chapel Cemetery.
