Rex Wilson Hampton, 90, of Galax, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at the Golden Living-Blue Ridge Nursing Home, Galax, Va.
Hampton was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Grayson County, Va., to Robert Calvin and Elsie Cox Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anne Enola Papy Hampton; daughter, Billie Anne Phelps Whitaker; brother, Rupert Lee Hampton; and sisters, Gladys Marie Turner and Roberta Virginia Johnson.
Left to cherish his memory are two sons, Douglas Lee Hampton and wife, Sue Ellen, of Rome, Ga., and David Wilson Hampton and wife, Karen of Oak Ridge, N.C.; four grandchildren and spouses, Melissa Phelps Pickens and husband, Steve, David Wayne Hampton and wife Jennifer, Heather Hampton Havel and husband, Dan and Keri Lee White and husband, Jack: five great-grandchildren, Maggie and Garrett Hampton, Caden and Ayla Havel and Peyton White.
Rex served his country in the U.S. Navy
during World War II
. He retired from Appalachian Power Company with 32 years of service. He was owner/operator of the White Top Cabs of Galax, Va.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., today, Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at Felts Memorial Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Ted Bartlett. After the service the family will receive guests at the home.
