Sylvia DeLaney, 70, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, in the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born on March 21, 1943, in Martinsville, Va., to Fairy Lovell Pettus and Ezra Evans.
In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, James R. "Dick" DeLaney.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Matt DeLaney and Alicia Miller, who currently reside in Freising, Germany; a granddaughter, Hailey DeLaney of Roanoke, Va.; sister-in-law, Ellen Wilson and brother-in-law, Robert Wilson and his wife, Barb, all of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and several cousins and dear friends.
Sylvia was loved by many for her singing as well as her warm personality. She was a member of the Highland Camerata community chorus, Appalwood folk music group, and The Yazoo Sisters jazz trio. She was a founding member of the Grayson County Folk Music Society and performed with the New River Opera Theater. She won many awards for folk singing at fiddlers' conventions across our region.
A memorial gathering will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, in the auditorium of the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence, Va. Friends are invited to bring musical instruments, songs and memories to share in celebration of Sylvia's life.
